Understanding your value and how your leadership influences others starts with you

The past two weeks have been filled with reminders of how precious life is and how easy it is to get wrapped up in things that don’t really matter. First there were the rains that fell across QLD and NSW, impacting most in these areas and creating challenges that were often out of our control. Then we had the passing of two sporting icons within days of each other, who were both true leaders in their own ways… often creating time to mentor younger players and inspiring them to continue to believe in themselves.

As leaders, and we are all leaders, you are asked to spend so much of your time focusing on what others need, what’s going to help them succeed, what’s going to solve their pain points. Often it’s easy to lose sight of what matters to you and where your ship is sailing. See… you, your time, your experience and your knowledge is valuable when you choose to value it. When you value these things, others will then do the same… as they also see them as valuable.

So, as you, your time, your experience and your knowledge are so valuable, how do you develop the ability to focus on you and adding extra amounts of value?

Here are 3 ways we’ve found to make this happen:

“I am the expert in me” starts with you – the reason people gravitate towards you is because of what you offer. Whether it’s skills, personality, your energy, your ability to build trust… these are the things that you can control and influence. You are the one who knows you best, knows your strengths, knows how you are able to influence those around you. By being the expert, and seeing that your expert qualities add value to others, makes bringing them to the table even more valuable. Be the expert and bring your A game to add value to those around you !
Your time is valuable – when you focus on the things that matter to you, filling your time with things that you love to do… others also benefit and grow. If that means taking a couple of days to rest and recharge, you benefit and those around you get a recharged person who can operate with a clear mind and stay on the path of delivering a vision. If it means having someone take work off you so you can focus on higher level work, that too is valuing your time. This adds productivity and profitability to your space… something that businesses recognise in challenging times. Prioritise where you add the most value and choose to do even more of this.
Learn to say NO well – when you value you and your time, you are able to recognise those things that should be taken on by others. By saying no to these tasks which aren’t valuing you or your time, it frees your time up to fill it with more valuable activities. Spending more time focussing on growing, mentoring, strategic direction will see the senior leaders identifying more value add opportunities, and their teams getting to do more high level work (which is being given up by the senior leaders). Saying no creates space to fill with things you want to say yes to.

Understanding how valuable you are starts with you valuing you. Focusing on you and the path you want is actually helping those around you, as by you being clear it makes it easier for them to see where you are going and they can see their path. Saying No (or no not yet) and building your self awareness of your expert abilities, will be your sharpest tools to shaping your journey.

This Too shall Pass… your Resilience will get you through

If we’ve taken anything from the past two years, it’s that through times of challenge, your ability to deal with what comes at you gets stronger. When the sun is shining and everything is going for you, this is the time where you make the most of the conditions and forge ahead. When the storms roll in, just like South East Queensland at the moment, you draw on the knowing that “this too shall pass” and that the resilience you have built up through dealing with challenges previously… it will drive you to overcome the obstacles again.

With flood waters rising and debris hurtling along the river, it has re-ignited a sense of “help your mate out in their time of need”… the true Australian way. This selfless act, which isn’t confined to times of challenge, has built a community spirit and made it a stronger bond between a group focussed on ensuring the best results are achieved. This is driven by the experience of having been there before… and getting through it.

So today it’s even more important, whether you are in flow or the rivers are flowing, that you reflect on how you have built your ability to take on challenges and continue on to create great outcomes for you and those around you.

Here are 3 areas that we see helping in times of challenge and uncertainty:

Connect with those in your circles – when you feel like you have to take challenges on in isolation, things often grow and become even more challenging. Yet by connecting with those in your space, you may find a way forward that may not have been obvious to you. Seek out those in your space, both to check in on them and also leverage their “think outside the square” abilities.
Focus on what you can control and influence – you see a pontoon and a boat floating down the river at high speed… while not pleasant and someone is going to be unhappy, what can you do about it? You have no control over what’s happening in that space… yet while you were focussing on that the water is rising to above your ankles. Where should you focus now… where you can influence the results. Be conscious of your surroundings and where your time, effort and money is best spent.
You are stronger than even you think – when you are faced with challenging times, and there’s a action to take that may not be 100% comfortable, take comfort knowing you will get through what comes at you and you will be ok. You’ve been faced with challenge previously, you’ve dealt with it and you’ve turned it in to a pathway that’s led you to where you are today. Know that you will be ok and the strength you have from successfully dealing with past challenges… this is what shows you what’s possible for you again.

It’s often said that how you deal with challenging times, shows the true character of the person. You’ve been there before, you’ve seen off the uncertainty, you’ve taken action and you’ve created quality results… your Resilience levels are there and you will create amazing outcomes again.

How are you attracting your pot of gold…

As the saying goes, see a rainbow and follow it to the end to find your pot of gold. Over the weekend we saw this ray of colour and sadly the first thought was “oohh where’s the gold”. This may give you an insight in to our confidence levels, that we felt we may need a pot of gold to cover the wagers on our round.

That we were focussed on an end result and what we could get, rather than taking note of what was actually going on in front of us, meant we were missing the true essence of this natural wonder. This actually sparked a conversation about who we had been over the past week and it appeared that we had been focussing on chasing the gold and not being present to what was in front of us.

Nature and buildings - finding more opportunities

We often choose to focus on the gold at the end of a rainbow, rather than what’s happening right in front of us. This showed up over the past week with several business leaders, each striving to scale and be successful, each becoming increasingly frustrated with where they were currently… yet each missing the quality business and humans that were in front of them.

Here are 3 ways you can see your rainbow and create your own pots of gold:

What are the facts – too often we get wrapped up in someone’s perception of what’s actually happening. They aren’t focussing on what actually happened or what was actually the case… they were focussing on their perception of what was happening. We call people on this and ask them to “Remove the Grey”… get clear on what the facts are, and these will let you see what’s driving your actions…. the facts or your perception of the situation.
Who are you being – the results we get, our “gold”, are a reflection of who we are being. A business is a reflection of the business owners, your space is a reflection of how you carry yourself, your family are a reflection of how you interact with them. Over the past week, who have you been… have you been present, have you been proactive, have you been avoiding some tough conversations. Be the best version of you and others will start to see your true colours.
Understand the feeling – when chasing your gold, it’s vital to know what that gold is and how it will feel when you have made it happen. For some, if may be the ability to choose where they spend their time, to sell the business, to retire, to work 4 days a week and have a “family day”. This strategic clarity will help you add even more motivation and help focus on what’s in front of you… which will lead you to your pot of gold and the feeling you actually want.

We often use rainbows as a metaphor for business with our clients. The most relevant one recently has been… “If you only chase the pot of gold, you’ll miss the beauty of the rainbow along the way”. Focus on the facts in front of you, focus on who you are being (be ok being you) and the impact this has on those around you, and understand what the feeling is when you ultimately want to experience. These will help you ensure your journey is an enjoyable one that also leads you to your pot of gold.

Valentine’s Day ties Business and Emotion up with a bow

Happy Valentine’s Day to all those out there who subscribe to the notion that the 14th February is an opportunity to show you care about someone enough to get something, or do something, over and above what you would normally do.

This day can split us into different camps:

For those who need an excuse, today’s your day and it’s your time to shine 😉
For those who show others how much they mean more often… again you have a weight of publicity suggesting you should do so
For those who may not have that special someone, you can choose to make someone’s day by doing something nice for them
For those who are against it, you’ll wait until tomorrow when the leftover flowers and chocolates are on sale and dining out isn’t at inflated rates
Or you could be in another category and if so… that’s totally ok

For us it’s interesting, in that the day captures the essence of true giving (giving without the expectation of receiving), bumping prices on a day that’s really like any other day… and the power of influencing you to make the occasion seem special. The biggest element for us is how, when attaching emotion to a buying decision, you can influence others to act in a different way. This shows in the amount of chocolates, flowers and romantic dinners that are added to the schedule on the 14th February each year…. and not other days of the year.

So why does the correlation between emotion and business matter and is it that necessary? With our clients, it’s a game changer and something that helps them deliver an immense experience for their stakeholders.

Here are 3 areas you can review and reset to develop emotion in your space:

Motivation – others “want” to be the best – where you have team players, and even clients, simply turning up to get something that may or may not mean much to them, then you will get what you get. They will probably do the bare minimum and there will be no attachment to the way they operate. Where you can to align what matters to them, and your desired outcomes, you find a space where their motivating factors are covered, they feel heard and feel part of something that sees them as valuable
Create an attachment to more than just the product – Valentine’s Day could be all about buying chocolates, buying expensive flowers, and going out to a fancy dinner / movie / having the kids looked after for the evening. But look at the advertising and promotion, it’s about the meaning behind the chocolates, the flowers, the overpriced dinner for two. It’s all about love, gratitude and showing others what they mean to you. Where you can show your stakeholders that they mean more than just what they do for you, this is where you build meaningful relationships and make them feel part of something bigger than just their role. This is where the biggest impact occurs.
Show others what’s possible and what it means for them – where you build a picture of what’s possible for those in your circles, whether it’s an associate’s path to being a director, whether it’s a client seeing where their business could be in 12 months, whether it’s a family seeing what it will be like when mum & dad can choose to not work on weekends and they can both spend quality time doing things as a family… where you build this you are creating a pathway that all of the stakeholders can contribute to. Keep it to yourself and make it all about you… and see how that works out. Their needs and what it will allow them to feel is the key.

We have a saying that’s become the basis of our work…. “It’s not the thing you want, it’s the feeling it gives you”. When you focus on that cup of coffee as a cup of hot water and coffee beans… you will get what you see. Where you choose to experience the feeling you get when you drink that cup of coffee, that moment where the world stops and you feel like you’ve taken a sip of something that’s radiating sunshine throughout your body, that feeling is actually what you are buying. Build the emption to turbo charge your outcomes.

The growth potential of a one person wolfpack is limited

The past 2 weeks has shown us how critical it is to ensure you are surrounded by quality operators, who are aligned with your vision, values and purpose. We have seen a number of scenarios where working in isolation, or feeling like they had to have all the answers themselves, has created even more challenges for business owners. They started to put some of their challenges in to the “too hard basket” or applied the “ostrich head in the sand” approach. Short term this was the most comfortable option, but now these items had grown and had become even more confronting. Got any of these things going on in your space now ?

Each of these business owners, when they were 100% honest with themselves, realised they were choosing comfort over moving forward. I would prefer to not know the whole truth as i feel i can deal with this… not the whole truth. This was now impacting their business and they didn’t know how to move forward… which is where we came in. Helping them own their direction allowed them to reset their immediate focus.

So how do you identify the best way to drop the “I have to do and know everything” and allow others to add value in your space?

Here are 3 areas you can focus on:

It will be an opportunity for others to grow – yes in the short term, it is easier to do things yourself. For those things you choose to do today, ask yourself “if not me, then who”… who would be doing this activity in a year’s time. This will identify who should probably be taking it on now… why wait a year for them to take it on. Make time today and invest in growing your wolfpack, and create time for you
You can compliment your skillset – most business leaders are blessed with a quality technical skillset. Where you are less proficient in other areas, or where you can include others to speed up your growth path, you look to others to add their expertise. We have provided cashflow forecasts that have helped business owners understand their cash needs and shape their immediate focus areas
You create opportunities to focus – by having others free up your time, compliment your skillset and educate you in areas where you may be less proficient, it allows you to focus on those areas where you are able to have the biggest impact. By knowing their cashflow forecast, business owners were able to focus on sales targets, funding requirements, team targets and communicating the strategy of the business to the team. These wouldn’t have happened if the leader was trying to focus on controlling everything.

An African proverb says “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. This seems such a simple quote, yet one that highlights where we can add so much value in our businesses. Drop the expectation of having to know & do everything, drop the ego that having others take things on, shows you aren’t capable of doing everything. It’s those business leaders who embrace their multi person wolfpack, and invest in them, who are the ones who get to choose where they spend their time.

With a new year comes a perfect opportunity to create the space you want

Happy New Year to you and your teams. We are excited to be entering a new year, as it provides you with an opportunity to reset the picture of what you will make happen this year.

You have an opportunity to look at 2021 and ask yourself a couple of things…

What worked for us and how can we do more of this
What did we learn over the past year and how can we use these learnings to create an even better space this year
What was the feeling we left 2021 with and is that the feeling we want in 2022

The exciting thing is that YOU get to choose what you will make this year be… you get to chart the path you want to take, you get to create the picture of your space by the end of 2022 and you get to set the feeling you want to be experiencing. This creates a blank canvass which you get to create.

So before you push off and start charging head first in to another year, ask yourself the following questions and create a picture of 2022 that both stretches and excites you…

Making time to create this vision of 2022 now allows you to consider the past 12 months, acknowledge what’s worked, learn from the challenges and create a plan to make 2022 an immense year, both personally and for your business. 2021 has been an interesting year for businesses… so what have you learned?

I’m going to be honest, it’s been a challenging year for many. We have walked with business owners through some dark & tough times, through major change, and through growing pains. The courage shown to take on these challenges, to be OK with where they were and to challenge their way of being… was inspiring itself. We’ve also worked with some business owners who have chosen to get even better, to understand their business even more, to be better humans… and this shows up in their results.

As the 2021 work year comes towards it’s ultimate day, it’s important to reflect on the year, those around us who have been there to lean on, to inspire us and help us realise that the vision we have set out to achieve is real and we are on the path to make it happen.

So as the work year winds down and your stakeholders look to take a well deserved break, you have a perfect opportunity to do exactly what Pooh mentions in the above picture. Here are some tips on rounding out the year well and setting 2022 up to be a great year:

Best tips to round up 2021 and setting up a better 2022

Reflect
Stop where you are, turn around and look back to this date last year. Feel what it was like to be in that position. It’s often we choose not to look back as there is so much coming at us from in front. But this time of reflection is VERY VALUABLE. It allows us to see the value we have added, how we have grown, what’s worked and created wins, what’s challenged us and created learnings that bought in to 2022 will make us even stronger / faster / more loving. Please make time to do this… you and your stakeholders want to know the value you’ve created from your hard work throughout the year.
Review
Look at the last 12 months and ask yourself a few things “What were our wins and how do we do more of that, What are our learnings and how do we incorporate these, What is our definition of #WINNING and are we using the 2021 experience to help move us towards this ultimate space”. Making time to understand this, will give you an opportunity to create change and allow you to continue on your path towards happiness… the ultimate for all of us.
Reset
Taking your revised view of what your next 12 months will look like and saying that’s awesome, isn’t enough. This view will require adjustment to your ways of operating, your stakeholder expectations, and the way you lead. Communicate to your stakeholders what’s changing, what it means for them and how it aligns with their own personal desire to create amazing results. Bringing this revised vision to life will take many hands… so be clear early what this looks like and support those who will help you deliver it.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You
Be the one to say thank you to those who matter, who have worked to help you in a challenging year, to those quality humans who have chosen to come on your journey with you. This act will be even more valuable in a year which has taken extra emotional resources to deliver. The thing about thank you’s is that they are free, take no time to deliver and show that you really appreciate them for them. This goes to your families as well… they have supported you through an interesting year so please thank them.

Making time to stop, take in the past 12 months, acknowledge what’s worked, learn from everything else and saying thank you to those who have helped you deliver the year that was…. is super valuable. Let your stakeholders know what they mean to you and how much you appreciate them… for them and also their effort.

Take control of your business in December to get the results you want

With the Black Friday sales now done and the pre-Christmas sales in full swing, there are 15 work days until Christmas. Some will be in countdown mode, looking to simply finish off the work they currently have and slip in to the break feeling refreshed and ready to enjoy quality time with friends and family.

For others, the next 15 days (or less depending on when the business shuts down) will include extra long hours, saying yes to everything that comes at them and choosing to try and ensure everyone else’s expectations are met…. generally at the expense of their own. It’s this time of year where you can have both dynamics happening in the same business at the same time… it’s just how you choose to handle it which determines how you finish the year.

So as business leaders, we can choose to proactively manage the pre Christmas rush and continue to deliver quality value. How can we do this and ensure a positive impact on our business…

Here are some tips:

Connect with your Quality humans
Throughout the year, you will have built relationships with quality humans who have been a pleasure to work with. So to us, it makes sense that you thank them… something that shows you value them as humans and as stakeholders in your business. This may seem like a small gesture, yet in the past we have seen this reinforce the trust and create an even stronger connection. It also shows that you see them as a priority and important to the business you are creating.
Communicate deadlines for taking on work
With 15 days to go, have you set your cut-off point for accepting 2021 work and when do you have your “Thank you for your enquiry. We have hit capacity of work we can guarantee for delivery pre Christmas” conversation. This transparency will help you manage the expectations of those looking to get work done pre Christmas, and help the team understand their delivery targets. Getting aligned with timelines and expectations, especially where work isn’t urgent & important 2021 work, will ensure everyone is on the same page up front.
Lock in your 2022 dates
Saying no to work is challenging at the best of times, especially with the fear that potential clients might go elsewhere. By managing expectations and challenging whether work is truly a pre Christmas delivery, you can look to lock in an early January date for delivery, to beat the new year rush. It’s not saying no, it’s just “no not yet”. This creates alignment and allows you to manage your schedule in a way that works for you. After all… we get to choose the work we take on.
Give your team a view of 2022
With the past 12 months having been challenging, we see thanking your team for their contribution as a non-negotiable. Without them your journey would have been very very different. So give them some highlights of things you have achieved, which often reinforces “We’ve done some insanely great things in a challenging year”. The break is also a time when people think about next year, what they might be doing, where the business might be heading, what do I have to look forward to. So prior to the Christmas break, make time to thank each of your team members individually, and give them a view of what’s coming in 2022. It allows them to understand what this looks like for them, and also allows them to think about ways they can “make this their own” while they are eating turkey and relaxing over the break.

The December period is always one where you have expectations from multiple stakeholders to deliver before Christmas. Proactively managing this will ensure your clients are managed, your team’s workload is managed, you are able to send your team off to the break with a view of what you want 2022 to look like and what it means for them. This certainty and vision will leave them ready to come back in the new year to make it happen.

What You Give Is As Valuable As What You Get

It seems as though there are many moments where time feels limited, increasing demands on this time seem never ending and you feel like you aren’t making any progress… it’s dominating conversations and creating frustration amongst some quality operators. “I should be doing this but i don’t get anything done i want” or “I’m always putting out fires and not making any progress”. Is any of this resonating and are you feeling this?

The interesting thing is that we are the ones with the power to choose how and where we spend our time, something that can get lost in the busyness and the expectations of others. We choose to fill up our schedules with what it is we feel is important… now whether it is important to us or someone else is where the gold lies regarding getting amazing results.

So how then, can we make the most of the moments we have in our week and still get that feeling we are adding value to others?

Here are a couple of ways to add extra value:

Give your time to get back time – “I don’t have enough time” will result in those around you not getting what they may need to enable them to do what they need to do without you, resulting in you having to spend even more time helping them. Give your time early, be clear about what needs to be done, ask what they need from you and then empower them to make decisions to move themselves forward. This long term focus will see you build capability and reduce their dependence on you (and your time).
Give your energy – as business leaders, your energy will be reflected in your business. The way you operate and interact with people will influence those in your teams. If you want to create an environment that has a vibrance and energy to stimulate great results and a can do attitude, this will have to come from the top. So keep investing in your energy levels through things that matter to you and ensure you make time to fill your cup.
Encourage others to give – in a time where others seem busy, the feeling you get when you offer to help them achieve something they can’t currently do is priceless. The thing is, if you can help them with something, this shows them that they can do the same for others. If I show you something is possible, and you get that sense of gratitude, it shows you how you could feel when you help someone else. This is powerful and the feeling is one that can motivate them to do it even more… a super result !

In times where you are busy, it’s often that those around you are also busy and feeling the weight of expectations. By giving to them, whether it’s time, energy or resources, you are showing them that they matter and their contribution is important. This will influence their desire to step up in a time where extra effort has no obvious payout. Give, give openly and give often… and you will create a dynamic space people love to be a part of.

Bringing you and your skill sets to the table gravitates others towards you

The business environment is an interesting one at the moment. There is a dynamic happening which we haven’t experienced before, certainly not recently anyway. There is an abundance of opportunities to take on work, yet there are also challenges with resources (whether they be getting supplies or people resources). As business owners, you are being asked to manage expectations on all fronts… not just one or two. This stretching of your time is seeing even the best leaders become reactive and feeling like they are starting to lose control. Are you starting to feel this ?

By backing the skills and energy you bring to the table, and choosing how to use them most effectively, you can identify where your time is most needed and how to influence the discussion outcomes. Being conscious of where your strengths are, allows you to look at the skill sets needed to create a successful outcome. If you are a problem solver by nature, and you spend all of your time dealing with paperwork and in unproductive meetings, how is this getting the most out of your time ? Either make the meetings productive (by being that problem solver) or create an opportunity for someone else to step in to that space….

Value your skills & experience – you have worked hard to develop your skills that add to your value and set you apart from others. The power of knowledge and experience allows you to do things quicker and get results in a more efficient way. To those around you this is valuable as they get to see how they can have their challenges resolved sooner than with others. Sharing these with those around you will help them build their toolkit of skills.
Manage expectations early – as business leaders, you are the ones who get to set expectations of those around you. Whether it’s clients and delivery time, team members and work schedules, or your own time management, adding this to the way you operate will create certainty for those around you. If it is clear what expected up front, then those who may not feel this fits in to their space will say so… allowing that conversation to happen proactively rather than after things have become unclear and messy. Be up front and you will create things on your terms.
Be comfortable being you – as they say “people buy people”, and whether you like it or not, others will buy in to you before they will buy in to your product. Be ok with who you are and the value you bring to the table. Be prepared to do things in your way… which sometimes means saying no when opportunities don’t fit in to your space. Being known for someone who is genuine, open, authentic will have others who value this lining up to work with you. It will also have people remembering you and referring you to those in their circles.

In these interesting times, get clear on where you are choosing to focus your time and the skills you are bringing to the table. Are you getting the most out of your experience, skills and knowledge or are you reacting to what everyone else wants of your time. Be focussed and use your time wisely.
