Taking action, even small steps, helps to create momentum and achieve big things
Every day we are faced with challenging situations… do I hit snooze and cancel that PT session, do I say no to some work so I can say yes to that ideal client, do I choose to finish early to spend some time with my family. Add to this the expectation of being “easily accessible”, regardless of whether the query is sent during or after office hours. It’s easy to see how stress, anxiety and overwhelm can build up, especially in these uncertain times where a lot of what happens is caused by things out of our control.
So what are the trends?
Kate Carnell, CEO of the Australian Chamber of Commerce, recently said “Businesses are now seeing the financial and personal cost of stress. More businesses are operating with fewer resources and staff are working often harder and longer hours.” Security of employment, constant workplace change, increased workloads, stronger competition and unclear work processes are all adding to the stress experienced by business owners and workers.
So how can you buck the trends?
Being a leader in your circles, naturally you will have others looking to you for guidance, motivation & inspiration. They are looking to their leaders to show them that it’s “OK” to be uncertain, because even in the uncertain times you still have a plan to keep moving forward… which adds certainty. Business leaders who make decisions and allow businesses to keep moving forward, especially where things may not be 100% clear, are ones who build the respect and create impressive results for them and their teams. Have the confidence to make decisions and know, regardless of the outcome, there is an option to keep moving.
Here are 5 ways to help you create momentum:
- Make decisions and get on with getting your outcomes… the longer you think about something the bigger it gets (in your mind anyway)
- Back your judgement and if the decision gives you a different result to what you were expecting… then that’s ok as now you get to make another decision to where to go next
- Encourage others to make decisions… this empowerment will see them become less reliant on you for permission.
- Take action… this is the best way to remove the “What If’s” and show what’s actually possible
- Ask for feedback and look for innovation from others… we don’t have all the answers and contributing to the direction of the business adds buy in and creates alignment
