The past week has seen a lot of conversations on whether to focus on short term versus long. Doing something that isn’t natural in the short term seems very time consuming and a waste of time. I’m better doing it myself… it takes less time and i know it’s going to be done right. No one can do it as well as I can. Heard that before?
The challenge with taking this perspective is that you will generally get stuck doing this work, limiting the time to do activities that add even more value. Unless you are forced to embrace the change, like having a broken right hand and being forced to use your left, it’s the easier option to keep your focus on just getting stuff done.
Taking a long term view, spending time creating patterns and beliefs that encourage skill development in others to take on tasks, is an investment that brings efficiencies. Allowing others to take on work which frees up your time to carry out activities that will add even more value. I used meeting attendance of team members to a) include the team in what’s going on b) expose team members to provide development opportunities c) over time to free up my need to be in the meetings.
This week, check in on whether you are focussing on simply getting things done, or whether you are seeing the opportunities to invest in those around you to free up your time to take on higher level activities. Managing this process will bring a LOT of extra value to your team and business.
