Having Accountability
“The American Society of Training and Development (ASTD) did a study on accountability and found that you have a 65% chance of completing a goal if you commit to someone, and 95% chance of success if you have a specific accountability appointment with a person you’ve committed to”
Having set the outcomes you want from your week, month, quarter or year, you charge off like a Hamster on the wheel. Taking action to make things happen, having conversations, meetings, workshops, delivering projects… all that you think you need to do to be successful.
At what point do you come up for air and check in on the results you are getting, the outcomes you wanted and whether you are actually doing what is needed to get the outcomes?
Having someone to regularly check in with to make this happen and keep you on track… this is Accountability. Accountability can take many forms and is a key component in delivering consistent results.
Here are 3 tips how to include Accountability in your schedule:
-
Accepting responsibility – owning your actions and the way you operate is key. Take responsibility for your daily schedule, the way you run your meetings and the interactions you have with clients… set the standard!
-
Be transparent – this can be challenging, especially when looking at your own actions. By being honest with yourself, you increase your chances of making better decisions going forward… tell the truth!
-
Include others – choosing to include those around you (peers, family, co-workers, team mates) or independent sources (mentors, coaches) makes you accountable to someone else. This challenges the “I’ll be easy on myself” soft option… we all need challenging!
This week, check in on how accountable you are and to whom you are holding yourself accountable. Take ownership of your standards and get someone to be your accountability buddy… trust me it’s a game changer.
If this helps you then it may also help those in your networks. If you need accountability and aren’t clear how to go about it, send us a note at strategy@mentorisgroup.com.au
Cheers and have an awesome week!
