Value Yourself

I had a fear of failure and a need to make sure everything was perfect before taking something on. I had to know I wouldn’t fail before I would say yes… the self doubt stopped me from doing things because I didn’t want to fail. It also meant that I valued safety and not failing more than I did the chance of being successful. I didn’t value myself highly enough…Ever felt like this before?

Valuing you, your time, your expertise and the value you add to others needs to start with you. Others are getting more than your time….. they are getting your expertise, your experiences, your lessons learned and your live case studies. The past week has seen this pattern show up in quality business owners and team leaders. “I couldn’t possibly charge that much for my time as I wouldn’t pay that for me to do it”.. even though the client had already pre-paid the amount mentioned.

So how can you shift your mindset to value yourself? Here are 3 tips:

You are valuable – the combination of skills, experience, lessons and personal development make you a valuable commodity. Others will engage you as they don’t have these skills so obviously have a gap in their own skillset, or no time to develop them. Be the one to fill their void.
Don’t compare – you are your own person and have your own skills. We are all different and bring different skills to the table, and you may not be right for everyone, so be comfortable being you and use your skills on your journey.
Invest in you – constantly developing your skills and investing in you will help you see your value. Water a plant and it grows… seeing your own value and how it adds value to others becomes very powerful. Embrace your inner awesomeness and let others experience it!

This week, think about the value you offer and get comfortable with this. When you own you and see your own value, others will also see the power you bring to the table. Look at what can happen if you do and take that step… you are giving yourself an opportunity to get even more awesome results !!

How to be Successful – The Power of One

The benefit of hindsight is a luxury afforded to those who have experience. Looking back over my years revolving around the sun, it’s become obvious much of my career was spent making sure others were successful and getting what they needed. Choosing long hours in the office to ensure projects were completed perfectly, so others would be happy with my work, was my “normal”. The fear of not being good enough was real…

Getting really clear on what WE want to achieve and what work means to us can be seen as being selfish… yet when we focus on what drives us and what matters to us – the team and you both win. Steven Covey identifies the “win win” scenario as one of the 7 habits of Highly Effective people.

So how can you shift your mindset to think win-win? Here are 3 tips:

Align your strategy – being involved in the process of setting your goals and KPI’s allows you to tie your performance to things that matter to you, things that make you successful. Personal development targets, types of work and assuming additional responsibilities sees everyone win
Focus on the process – having clear roles and responsibilities that tie to our goals, allows us to focus on the steps to take. If we choose to focus on the process, the results will take care of themselves
Lead from within – by taking 100% ownership of our standards, our expectations and our direction, we are choosing to be our own leader. A team full of leaders means we have a highly motivated group looking to create success.

This week, take a look at where your effort is focussed and who ultimately benefits. If it’s all about others getting what they want, have a conversation about tying your drivers of success to your performance.

Work Smarter not Harder

“I don’t have enough time in the day to get all the things on my list done” is the most common excuse used for why businesses and teams are not successful. Too many distractions, too many other priorities, too many deadlines… not enough time to get my work done. I heard it 3 times in one group sharing this week… you ever experienced this feeling? What does it mean to ‘work smarter’?

A common fact which tends to be overlooked is that we all have the same amount of hours in the day… 24. It’s how we choose to fill these hours that makes the difference in the results we get. Some choose to start the day with exercise, meditation, sleeping in, family time… others read first up for 2 hrs then start work related activities. It’s important to recognise we are all different and depending on what you want to achieve will drive your levels of prioritisation and areas of focus.

Here are 3 tips to help you work smarter and how you spend your time:

Plan – Start your day with an outline of the priorities you have, the non-negotiable activities and what you plan to get achieved from the day. They say “Structure gives you Freedom”, so starting with a plan gives you an idea what’s already due to be accomplished
Prioritisation – we often start the day with an outline of what we want to get achieved and then the day happens. Even when things come from left field, check in on where this fits in the priority and place it in the cue based on urgency
Manage Expectations – When things come at you during the day, don’t automatically say yes and assume this needs to be done instantly. Ask the question of “when is this due and is it ok for me to get it to you at a future time (later today, tomorrow…) as i’m in the middle of something important. By asking this question you find out when something can be scheduled in.

This week, check in on how you are managing your time and how efficient you are currently. Have you been using time as an excuse and is it time to apply the tips above to see how you can change your results.

Success in 2019

Welcome to 2019 and the start of an exciting year for opportunities and growth. Hopefully your Christmas period was filled with time to rest, relax, recharge and surround yourself with those who matter. This time will become even more important as we get busy, deadlines kick in and extra effort is needed. “Filling your Cup” allows this to happen when you need it most.

Now it’s time to look forward and get clear on what you are prepared to make happen this year. Incorporating the lessons of 2018, being aligned with what drives you and continuing to grow your skills, will have you getting the results you need to feel you have been successful.

Here are 3 questions to help set up your year from the start:

What will a successful 2019 look like – Steven Covey in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People identified “Begin with the end in mind” as a key habit. By picturing the achievement of all you want by the end of 2019, it gives you a sense of what this will feel like. Having this feeling will then drive your action to make it happen.
Who do you need to be – to make this success happen, we need to be a particular type of person. Decisive, committed, structured, driven, a leader, innovative, accountable… all vital to taking action and getting results. What characteristics will you display to make your year a success?
What steps are needed to make it happen – you have the feeling of success, you know who you need to be to be a success, now you need a plan in place to make it happen. Set out your top 3 Goals, what’s required to make them happen and what needs to be done each week.

Now is the perfect time to get this clarity and direction for your year. This week, answer these three questions and start the year off on the front foot. If you need a Strategy session to get clear on these, let us know and we will arrange a catch-up.

No Time for Time Management

Have you ever noticed some people are able to stay organized while getting a massive quantity of work accomplished, while others appear to be busy but never actually produce results? Time management is the key to becoming a successful entrepreneur. Clay Clark

Constantly being in a state of “I’ve got so much to do but I don’t know where to start” generally means we lack true direction and haven’t taken the time to get clear on what we want to achieve. Some causes of this lack of clarity include procrastination, putting off making decisions, waiting for others to take the first steps, fear of not getting the result you want and being too concerned with what others will think. It’s more like pushing peas around your dinner plate rather than just eating them and getting to what you really want…. desert. How many of us have experienced this?

To ease pressure on you and your teams by removing the feeling of going around in circles, get some structure in to your days. They say Structure gives you Freedom and the ability to take on more uncertainty… perfect for helping you stop the unstructured craziness and help you on the road to cracking results. Mentoring businesses in Brisbane I see significant quick wins, particularly through adding simple processes to free up our precious time.

Here are 3 tips to improve your time management:

1. Get clear on what you want to achieve – a clear plan, with expected delivery timelines, allows you to set and take specific steps to get the results you want. Where to focus to make this plan a reality will add structure in to your schedule.

2. Apply the 4 D’s – Do, Diarise, Delegate, Dump. By applying these each day, you will ensure that your schedule is kept on point. At a minimum, by applying the 4 D’s at the start and finish of each day you will find tasks will not be able to “sit stagnant” on a list. Getting clear on what you will say NO to gives you the freedom to free up time.

3. Involve those around you – what can you say no to which means it then gives someone else the opportunity to take it on… see it as an opportunity for them to develop their skills and feel they are having more of an impact on the direction

None of these will actually happen unless you commit to adding the structure and doing the work to make it successful. This implementation and persistence to get the results is now up to you. Selfish People are Successful

Yesterday was cold, windy and we were up against a couple of tough competitors… we had every excuse available not to perform at our best. Yet the desire to beat some tough competition, and progress to the next round, meant we had to do something special…. be selfish. The banter was there, yet collectively as a team we did what we needed to do to stay at the top of our game.

Being Selfish can be seen in a negative context, and it’s true it generally does have this meaning. Yet in instances where you are focussed on achieving a goal or delivering a project, it becomes critical that you focus on that person who matters most…. you.

3 Tips to being Selfish (in a good way)

Here are three tips:

Remove Distractions – the bright shiny things are those that cause you to get off track. Being clear on the result you want brings clarity and purpose
Focus on each step – once you’ve set your desired destination, focus on your steps and what you need to do to make that happen. By everyone in a team focussing on their job, it contributes to the team achieving their desired result
Back you and your skills – you are in the position you are in because of the skills you have and what you’ve displayed in the past. You’ve been promoted, you’ve won that contract, you’ve started your business…. you’ve already displayed what it takes to be successful !

Getting the Results We Want

One of the biggest factors preventing us from getting the results we want is us. We tend to have all the skills to succeed, to exceed expectations and raise standards to the next level. Yet we don’t back these up and believe we’re good enough to deliver…. something I’ve experienced on many occasions.

Self belief is a key ingredient to being successful. Having the confidence and courage to keep taking action, especially when faced with challenges, requires having the belief you can and will discover options to get the outcome you want. Instilling this in both you and your teams will create an environment of success and an attitude of winning.

3 Tips to Believing you can

So do we build this self belief? Here are three tips:

You have all you need – we have all the technical skills we need to make things happen. Realising we are the ones empowered to make that call, create that opportunity, build that relationship can be done with the skills we have now
You’ve had success before and can again – once we experience the results of making a quality decision, we can demonstrate success. Winning that ideal client, helping a client fix a problem they have, hitting a target… all show that you’ve tasted success and that it’s possible again
Focus on what could go right – choosing to focus on what’s possible gives you the motivation to keep striving. Believing you can get that outcome you want, that bigger client, that promotion, hitting that stretch target…. all go towards showing you can be successful

Own Your Direction Business Owners!

Talking with multiple business owners over the past week, predominantly about what they wanted their business to look like in 12 months, bought up a number of challenges being faced. It also reinforced the growing trend towards leaders & owners not having certainty around what they are building. This uncertainty was impacting the quality of their decision making and their results.

3 Tips to help you take charge

So how do we best get the certainty you need to take the right action? Here are 3 simple tips you can implement today…

You take control – if you don’t step up and hit your ball down the fairway, who will? Backing the skills and ability you have now, you take a swing and get a result. Based on the result you refine your next shot, again backing the skills you have now.
Your direction is purely yours – we have our own desire of what we want to achieve. Getting clear on what this means for you, allows you to set your aim towards this target. Let others worry about their own direction, you have your own to get on with chasing.
Have the conversation – if you don’t know how to make this happen yourself, speak to someone who can. Don’t waste time wishing, waiting and hoping this will happen… seek out someone who can help you make this happen now.

With the pace of change in today’s society, it’s easy to get distracted from what you are ultimately wanting to achieve. The constant placement of bright shiny things in our view can bring a feeling of disillusionment, causing us to take our eye off the ball. This is where the art of the re-focus comes in to play and is a very valuable tool.

3 Tips to help you Refocus

So how do we best get out eye back on the ball if we are feeling a little overwhelmed? Here are 3 simple tips you can implement today…

Take time out to review what outcomes you truly want – by being clear with what successes we ultimately want in our businesses, we can get specific on the plans needed to make this happen
Focus on what matters – removing the urge to follow the bright shiny things allows us room to follow the activities required to get what we truly want. Clarity in this allows us to get specific on targets and actions
Align your activity to your strengths – matching your actions to your strengths gives even more scope to chase what truly matters and what will drive your ultimate happiness.

This week take time out to reflect on your levels of distraction and how many bright shiny things are currently getting in your way. Reset, restart and refocus on what really matters and use all your energy to make this happen… it’s this that will make you ultimately happy and successful.

Back YOUR judgement

So how does backing your own judgement help you achieve even more success? Sunday mornings are allocated to recharge the batteries and invest in me…. spending time in an activity I love, that’s not directly work related, surrounded by other quality people doing the same. The picture above may present a view contrary to this to some…standing on the tee faced with the seemingly daunting prospect of hitting a small ball over so much water.

So where does your focus go to in the picture?

Most would focus on the mass of water in front of them, balking at taking it on. I see this as an exciting prospect, challenging the skills I’ve developed through years of practice and playing, forcing me to back these skills to reach the fairway far away down the right hand side.

Here are three tips that have worked for me, when backing myself:

Get comfortable with you and your skills – you know the skills you have and how much work you’ve put in to get to where you are now. The hard work, whether it be studying, work experience, spending time with quality mentors, has got you to this point.
See what could go right – this is a perfect example of how easy it would be to focus on the massive downside that’s staring us in the face. Adjust your focus and picture what your view will be when you reach the desired outcome… here it’s the 2nd shot from the fairway.
Make a decision and trust your judgement – once you are prepared to back your skills and can see what things will look like when you succeed, then you choose to be 100% present in taking action and following through. The intensity in which you do this will actually determine your success…. in the water or on the fairway.

So this week, when faced with a challenge or an opportunity, step through the above tips and see where you land your ball. I’m certain your success % will skyrocket when you are the one who backs your judgement.
