Strategic Planning

Recently I posted this as a topic which created quite an amount of discussion, both from business owners and leaders. “It’s not simple, it’s a complex process that takes a lot of work”; “that’s only for the owners of the business, I just do my job”; “we have a process we go through but nothing ever happens or be communicated”. Nothing sexy here apart from some very true comments.

I suppose the comment should be rephrased… “When done well, strategic planning is simple”. Having a clear business strategy, leader development plan or annual strategy day retreat can be highly effective in moving you and your position forward. You will take more action, be more proactive, be motivated to create the necessary change and be inspired to see all those around you also be successful.

So how then, do we do strategic planning well and make it sexy? Here are some tips that have worked for our clients:

  • Get everyone on the same page – whether it’s having the business agree to the direction, your boss being clear on what you want to achieve or you as a leader being clear what your team members want… having everyone pushing the wheelbarrow in the right direction creates more options to carry more produce to market

  • Clearly communicated – getting clarity on who is doing what, what the SWOT’s (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) are for each area and ensuring responsibilities and ownership are clear, creates an understanding of who drives activities and who can play a support role

  • Actively reviewed – you’ve got your plan and it’s clear who’s owning each section of the plan… how do we drive making it happen? Accountability is key and consistent checking in on progress allows us to celebrate the successes and acknowledge the people / processes that are delivering great results. It also ensures we keep things front of mind and a focus on our own development.

How would it feel to have everyone on the same page, the strategic plan clearly communicated and regular accountability sessions helping ensure delivery of top class results…. now that’s sexy ! And you know the best bit… it can be done in a simple manner.

Forward this on to those in your networks so they too can get value from our regular tips. If you would like to be that leader who sets their standard at levels others will follow, send us a note at and let’s chat about how we can add value.

Have an awesome week!
