“What we can or cannot do, what we consider possible or impossible, is rarely a function of our true capability. It is more likely a function of our beliefs about who we are”. Tony Robbins
The beliefs around why we can’t do things act as possibility filters…. they stop us from being able to take on activities, make things happen and limit our ability to have the success we want. From “I’m not good enough to be in this role” to “I could never do that or make that happen”, I’ve heard a lot of apparent reasons why people choose not to make things happen. It generally leads to stress and frustration when we don’t get the results we expect from ourselves and our teams.
Recognising that we have particular beliefs around things we do, which can be both helpful and less helpful, allows us to identify where we need to focus. Even though you have the skills, having a belief that you aren’t good enough to take that promotion, to be captain of a team or take on that activity you really like, will stop you from being the person you need to be to make it happen. This will then totally frustrate you as you want the extra pay, status, recognition that comes with it.
4 Questions to ask yourself regarding your Beliefs:
What is it that you really crave?
What belief is stopping you from having this?
What are you prepared to change?
What are 3 steps you will take starting tomorrow…
By asking these questions honestly, you will get clear on what’s standing in your way of having what you really want. Seeing the challenge and the way to change your belief is so powerful, especially if it means you get to do something that currently is simply a wish.
